Essex County Council understand how important flexibility and wellbeing is for our colleagues working across children's Social Care and that we need to think differently. We have therefore developed a nine-day working fortnight for full time frontline Social Workers within Children’s services. If you would like more information on this, please follow this link .

Children and Families is recognised as a service in which social work can develop and prosper, with a culture of collaboration, integrity and compassion; promoting the development and wellbeing of children, young people and their families; protecting them from neglect and abuse. Working together with partners delivering a range of early help, family support and effective social work interventions which build resilience, remove barriers and enable children and young people to look forward to a brighter future.

Assessment and Intervention (A&I)

The Assessment and Intervention (A&I) teams act as the gateway for children, young people, parents/carers, and other agencies to access Children and Families services. A&I handles incoming assessments and short-term intervention work with families, focusing on children in need (CIN) and their families. They also manage S47 child protection inquiries, working jointly with partners like the police. A&I plays a pivotal role in transferring cases to Family Support and Protection Teams when longer-term intervention is required or when child protection plans come into play. If families don't require ongoing social work support following an assessment, they can transition to Family Solutions as part of the Early Help Offer.

In this role, Social Workers manage a defined caseload and work closely with children, young people, and families/carers to bring about positive change and improved outcomes. This includes conducting assessments, purposeful interventions, and reviews related to Child Protection, Child in Need, and Children Looked After.

To excel in this role, candidates should hold a diploma or degree in social work, be registered with Social Work England, and demonstrate practice aligned with current professional standards. A solid understanding of social work knowledge, emotional intelligence, and analytical skills is essential.
