Essex County Council (ECC) are delighted to be supporting Maldon District Council to recruit a Principle Technical Lead on a three-month temporary basis. Please note that this role requires 2 days a week site attendance.

Maldon District Council is looking for an experienced and proactive Principle Technical Lead to play a key role in supporting the effective delivery of Development Management services.

This is an important leadership role within the Place, Planning & Growth service, supporting the day‑to‑day management of Technical Support and Validation functions. The role focuses on ensuring compliant, efficient and customer‑focused processes, strong team performance, and continuous service improvement.

The role:

Reporting into the Technical Support Team Leader, you will:

  • Support the day‑to‑day management, workflow and prioritisation of Technical Support and Validation Officers
  • Act as a point of escalation for complex or sensitive customer and internal enquiries
  • Help drive service improvement, consistency and resilience across Development Management processes
  • Support staff development, performance management and training
  • Contribute to improved systems, digital services and customer self‑service
  • Work collaboratively across teams and services to support statutory and corporate objectives

This role suits someone who combines strong technical understanding with people leadership, process improvement and a genuine commitment to public service.

The experience you will bring:

  • Strong experience in Development Management and/or Building Control environments
  • Confidence managing workflows, priorities and competing demands
  • The ability to support and develop others through coaching, guidance and clear communication
  • Experience contributing to business or process improvement initiatives
  • A customer‑focused approach, with the confidence to handle complex or contentious enquiries
  • Good working knowledge of planning support systems and digital tools
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to work positively with colleagues, members, partners and stakeholders

The ideal candidate will need to attend the office at least twice a week, ideally Tuesday and Wednesday or Wednesday and Thursday.
