Career-defining opportunities

Essex County Council is an organisation with an ambitious mindset. We’re dedicated to delivering transformative change for 1.2 million residents. And for you, that means a career-defining opportunity…

In March 2026, the Government announced that councils in Greater Essex will be reorganised into five new unitary authorities from April 2028, abolishing all 15 of the current councils in Greater Essex. You can read more about Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) on our dedicated webpage.

Councils in Greater Essex are also working towards establishing a Mayoral Combined County Authority, which will provide strategic leadership and economic growth across Greater Essex.

How might LGR impact my role?

All roles in local government in Greater Essex will be impacted by LGR but there is currently no confirmed timeline for when detailed structural changes will begin. Several formal stages of the LGR process must be completed before service‑level design can start, regardless of whether you work in a countywide team, a unique county role or a more local service.

The work you currently do will still be needed in the future. Early conversations are under way, but decisions about specific roles, structures and locations are unlikely to be made until around spring 2027. For most employees, their role will automatically transfer to one of the new unitary authorities on 1 April 2028 on the same terms and conditions as before, under the principles of TUPE. If you have any questions about how a specific role may be impacted, please speak to the hiring manager at your interview.

How might devolution impact my role?

With devolution, most employees will see no impact on their role. If any role involves strategic work in the below areas, there may be an impact. The hiring manager will discuss this with you at interview.

  • Transport and infrastructure
  • Skills and employment support
  • Housing and strategic planning
  • Economic development and regeneration
  • Environment and climate change
  • Health, wellbeing and public service reform
  • Public safety.
