We are now seeking an exceptional individual to join us as Head of Policy, Public Affairs & Leader Office a pivotal leadership role at the heart of our organisation.
About the Role
As Head of Policy, Public Affairs & Leader Office, you will be the strategic bridge between the Council and its key stakeholders government, parliamentarians, partners, and the wider public. You will lead on shaping and promoting our policy agenda particularly in the context of local government reorganisation (LGR), raising the Council profile, and ensuring our voice is heard where it matters most.
This is a rare and exciting opportunity to influence real change and deliver meaningful outcomes for our residents.
What You will Do
- Provide expert advice and strategic insight to the Leader, Cabinet, and senior officers.
- Lead a high-performing team to deliver impactful policy and public affairs strategies in the context of LGR.
- Build and nurture influential relationships across government, media, and partner organisations.
- Champion Basildon ambitions, ensuring our priorities are understood, supported, and funded.
- Navigate the democratic landscape with confidence, diplomacy, and political acumen.

- A proven track record in policy, public affairs, or government relations.
- Experience working at a senior level with elected Members and senior stakeholders.
- Outstanding communication, influencing, and leadership skills.
- The creativity and drive to shape strategy and inspire a team.
