Essex County Council (ECC) are delighted to be supporting Castle Point Borough Council to recruit a Refuse Driver/Loader on a temporary basis.

*Please note that this is a 37 hours per week contract working Monday-Friday, 07:00am-14:30pm*

The Opportunity

To undertake, individually or as part of a team, duties connected with the collection of household and commercial refuse / recycling from a variety of locations (for example, houses, shops, schools). This could involve the use of a full range of refuse containers (for example household bins, plastic sacks, ‘wheelie bins’, paladin bins, boxes, caddies, etc).

When acting as Refuse Driver, to drive a refuse collection vehicle.

To ensure the provision of good customer care.

Accountabilities

  • To contribute to achieving the Council’s corporate objectives and priorities.
  • To contribute to achieving the Council’s agenda for achieving continuous improvement in service delivery.
  • To collect all waste and recyclables from domestic and / or commercial premises in accordance with safe working methods and departmental policies and procedures.
  • To carry out daily maintenance and checks on the allocated vehicle and to report any defects in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • To drive and operate the refuse vehicle safely round the required route and to the required discharge point
  • To ensure the safe manoeuvring of the vehicle on the round or at the disposal location with the use of trained reversing assistants, where necessary.
  • To deliver sacks, bins, containers, leaflets and other promotional material, etc as and when instructed to do so.
  • To operate compaction and bin lifting equipment in a safe manner.
  • To ensure that bin lifting and compaction equipment is secured correctly when the vehicle is in transit.
  • To clear up spillages associated with waste and recycling presented for collection in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • To work flexibly to ensure that all waste management services operate effectively and efficiently assisting other crew members, teams and supervisors as instructed.
  • To ensure that all relevant information relating to collections is recorded and reported as appropriate and issues and queries from residents/customers are dealt with in a courteous, responsible and impartial manner
  • To report defects to vehicles and equipment in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • To assist in the washing of the refuse collection vehicle to which you are assigned, and to ensure that it is maintained inside and out, in a clean and tidy condition.
  • To undertake such duties as are appropriate to your grade and hours of work as may reasonably be required of you by your line manager including;
  • Missed collections and other service issues
  • Bulky collections
  • Assisted collections
  • Deliveries of containers, sacks, leaflets, etc
  • Cleansing activities
  • Yard duties
  • Snow clearances
  •  To undertake training relevant to the job and service area as required.
  • To adhere to existing working practices, methods, procedures, undertake relevant training and development activities and to respond positively to new and alternative systems of work.
  • To take reasonable care for your health and safety and have regard to other persons who may be affected by the performance of your duties, in accordance with the provisions of Health & Safety legislation, and Council Codes of Practice and Procedures
  • In the event of the service being temporarily suspended, for example due to adverse weather conditions, to undertake any other duties that may reasonably be required of you.
  • To carry out any other reasonable duties and responsibilities within the overall function, commensurate with the grading and level of responsibilities of the post

The Experience You Will Bring

  • Dealing with members of the public in some capacity
  • Experience of undertaking refuse and recycling collections or similar operation
  • Experience of providing good customer service
  • Experience in driving Class 2 / HGV Vehicles
