It’s Occupational Therapy (OT) Week! We spoke with Georgina to learn more about how she came to be an OT and how she continues to deliver an outstanding service here in Essex:
What’s your story? How did you come to be an Occupational Therapist in Essex County Council and what team do you work in?
“I joined Essex County Council in 2016, first on a temporary basis and then as a Senior OT in 2017. I have a passion for helping others improve their quality of life and have been particularly drawn to roles that can influence and impact service delivery to improve outcomes for people. I have been lucky enough to gain valuable experience working in various teams including the Independent Workforce Team and the Commissioning Team and more recently in the new and pioneering ICELS Team as the Clinical Lead OT.”
How do you use meaningful occupations to change the lives of the people you support?
“Meaningful occupations are central to our work as Occupational Therapists. In my current role, I adopt a strengths-based approach, collaborating closely with adults, families, stakeholders, partners, and commissioners. This ensures that Essex County Council’s equipment provision is grounded in sound practice, empowering both the individuals we support and our Occupational Therapists.”
What would you say to Occupational Therapists who are curious about working in social care?
“I would say that social care allows you to make a significant difference to people’s lives, there are so many different roles that can be explored by OT’s and we are seeing this more with emerging roles in Commissioning, Housing and Community Equipment for example. Essex is a melting pot of expertise with inspiring and dedicated OT’s, if your interested in what it might involve for you I’d say get in touch and learn more!”
