Olayinka: Entrepreneur to apprentice

We’ve been speaking with our People and Organisation Development apprentices to get a glimpse into the amazing work they do – Olayinka’s blog completes our set of 4 interviews, and touches on her fascinating personal career experience.

Having previously run her own business as an entrepreneur, Olayinka made the decision to pursue an apprenticeship.

Read all about Olayinka’s incredible experience, which includes some invaluable advice to others with a similar journey to her:

How has your life experience outside of work helped you succeed as an apprentice?

Starting over isn’t always easy, but my life experience has made it possible and even empowering. As a parent, I’ve learned resilience, patience and how to stay centred when juggling many moving parts. Those qualities have been essential in balancing work, study and personal life. I also had to accept that my apprenticeship experience would naturally look different because I’m in a different phase of life. That acceptance allowed me to approach learning with a calmer mindset and realistic expectations. Instead of comparing myself to others, I focused on showing up consistently and doing what I could each day.

How has your previous work experience helped whilst navigating your apprenticeship?

My time as an entrepreneur shaped me in ways I didn’t fully appreciate until I became an apprentice. Running a production company taught me how to quickly assess what works and what doesn’t, stay adaptable and remain solution‑focused under pressure. That mindset has helped me navigate new concepts and unfamiliar tasks without feeling discouraged. Working in customer service strengthened my communication and emotional intelligence, which has been especially useful in a People and Organisational Development setting. I’m also fortunate to have a line manager who genuinely wants to see me succeed, having that support has made a huge difference.

Do you have any advice for anyone at a similar stage in their life considering an apprenticeship?

My advice is simple: don’t be afraid to start over. Both your professional and personal experiences will give you more grounding than you might expect. Be open to learning, be kind to yourself and trust that every phase of your life can lead to something new and meaningful. You only get one life, and it’s completely okay to be more than one thing in it. It’s also okay if people don’t understand your choices – it’s your life, not theirs.

Hopefully, you’ll find yourself in an environment that sees you, supports you and empowers you. Take it one step at a time. You’re braver than you think for choosing change, and that courage will carry you far.
