Step Up to Social Work - Matt's experience - Working for Essex

Step Up to Social Work – Matt’s experience

Step Up To Social Work is a 14-month, full-time programme. It is designed for people who want to become a social worker but do not have a degree in social work. Successful applicants train through a combination of academic study and hands on social work experience in a local authority.

The programme is delivered by Essex County Council in partnership with universities within regions across England. Learning is conducted face to face in a central regional location or remotely. Participants receive a bursary of £21,995 over the duration of the programme to support them whilst in training.

Hear from Matt who has previously undertaken the scheme:

Why did you choose Social Work as a career?

I studied Sociology at University and was always interested in understanding differing family dynamics, looking specifically at social structures, trends and cultural norms. Following University I started my career as a support worker. This presented an opportunity to work alongside social workers, gaining an opportunity to build upon my skills in undertaking direct work and supervising children with their families. It was from this point that I knew that I wanted to progress to becoming a social worker.

What was your experience like on the Step Up programme?

What an incredible experience. The programme is intense and you do need to prepared to work hard, however I felt that the busy schedule was helpful with my learning. There is little gap between the studied learning and the ‘on the job’ learning. I found everyone incredibly helpful and supportive. I met some incredible people, many who I have stayed in contact with, and as a cohort we were able to support each other, alongside the support provided by teaching staff. I think to highlight how meaningful and supportive my experience was, I have since returned providing information about working with children in care who are seeking asylum.

What advice would you give to applicants applying to the Eastern Region?

Just to go for it, if you are passionate about working with children and families and want to make a difference, the step up course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to do so. The course provides the learning days necessary to build upon your knowledge base, whilst also having placements to provide you hands on experience. The step up course further gives a pathway of progression and growth. Since undertaking the course I have been able to follow a pathway that has now led to being a Team Manager for a children in care team.
