Internal progression – How Evie’s switch to HR ignited her career

In January 2025, we were joined by three new apprentices in our People and Organisation Development function! Our new colleagues are completing rotations throughout the function, learning skills and core behaviours whilst they gain a qualification.

Continuing through the programme, we’ve spoken with Evie, who has chosen to speak about internal progression as part of her experience here:

Moving to a new function

Transitioning from a Level 3 Business Admin apprenticeship to a Level 5 HR apprenticeship has been a challenging but rewarding step in my career. I will share what prompted the change, the experience has developed my skills and what advice I’d offer to anyone considering a similar path. I currently work within People and Organisation Development.

After completing my Level 3 Business Admin apprenticeship, I found myself drawn to the people-focused aspects of my role. I realised that Human Resources was a field where I could make a meaningful impact on organisational culture and employee experience. I saw HR not just as a support function, but as a space where I can genuinely make a difference, helping others while contributing to the success of the wider organisation. I wanted to take the next step in my professional development, which led me to pursue my current role!

“I have consistently felt encouraged and supported.”

Learning new skills

The Level 5 Apprenticeship has helped me develop critical thinking skills through contributing to projects that influence broader workforce planning and employee engagement strategies. These experiences gave me a deeper appreciation for how important Human Resources is in shaping its organisations culture and supporting its people. The transition has been both challenging and rewarding, the Level 5 Apprenticeship has taken me out of my comfort zone.

What’s made the journey even more valuable is the balance between learning and applying the learning in real-time. I’ve gained theoretical knowledge around HR practices, legislation and ethics, while also being to immediately apply that knowledge in day-to-day work. This practical experience has helped reinforced what I’ve learned and given the confidence to take on more responsibility in my role.

One of the key things that has made my transition between apprenticeships so positive is the incredible support system I’ve had around me. From my line manager to the training provider and colleagues around the teams, I have consistently felt encouraged and supported. Whether it’s been helping me balance my workload with study deadlines, offering me guidance on projects or simply checking in on I’m doing. Their support has played a huge role in my development, knowing I have people who believe in me and are invested in my growth has given me the confidence to push myself, take on new challenges and stay motivated throughout the journey.

A rewarding journey

The transition between levels has been a significant and rewarding step in both my personal and professional development. It’s allowed me to build on skills I gained in my business admin role, while diving deeper into a field I’m genuinely passionate about. The journey has been challenging but with the right support and clear sense of purpose, it’s been incredibly fulfilling so far. I’ve grown in confidence, taken on more responsibility, and developed a clearer vision of the kind of career I want to build.

For anyone considering a similar path, I’d highly recommend exploring the opportunities available through apprenticeships – they offer a unique balance of learning, earning and real-world experience that can open doors to exciting new possibilities.
